Back-half recap, part I...
Four college baseball players and an NFL referee signed in the latter half of the week...
Vanderbilt infielder Ryan Flaherty signed a pair of index cards and partially completed a questionnaire care of the athletic department in just six days. The junior from Maine led the team in batting average as a freshman and was second on the squad last year as a sophomore, hitting .381 with a team-best 23 doubles.
Nebraska right-handed pitcher Johnny Dorn also signed a pair of index cards and completed a questionnaire care of the school in only 7 days. The junior was a Second Team All-American after the 2007 campaign that saw him compile a 10-3 record and 5.23 ERA in 16 starts.
Also signing was Rice right-handed pitcher Ryan Berry, last season's National Freshman of the Year. The Owls' stud signed a pair of index cards and completed a questionnaire care of the athletic department in just 6 days. Berry led Conference USA in both wins and strikeouts last season.
Rounding out the college baseball signers was Louisville right-handed pitcher Zack Pitts, who signed a pair of index cards and completed a questionnaire care of UL in only 6 days. The senior went 10-3 on the hill last year and compiled a 2.52 ERA in 18 starts as he helped lead the Cardinals to the College World Series.
And finally, NFL referee Mike Carey, arguably the best in the business, signed a pair of photos and an index card care of his business in just 9 days. Carey, who worked last week's snow-filled battle between Seattle and Green Bay, also included a nice note with the return.
