Current, future star....

Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel, a Heisman finalist last season, signed and returned a Sports Illustrated magazine I sent to him in December of 2007. That request, care of the Tigers' athletic department, took nearly 300 days. Daniel, a senior from the state of Texas, threw for over 4000 yards while completing nearly 70% of his passes last fall and is a former First Team All-Academic Big XII selection. He earned Second Team All-America honors last year and was named the 2007-2008 Big XII Offensive Player of the Year and Conference Male Athlete of the Year.

Also signing was Michigan freshman wide receiver Darryl Stonum, who returned a pair of index cards in about two months. The former four-star prospect from Texas has had limited opportunities in the Wolverines' first three games of the 2008 season.

Three this week...

Northwestern running back Tyrell Sutton signed a pair of index cards care of the Wildcats' athletic department in about two months. The senior comes into the 2008 season as the Big Ten's leading active rusher with nearly 3000 career yards on the ground.

Also signing was Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo, who sent back a pair of index cards care of the UT athletic department in under a month. The senior was a First Team All-Big XII selection last fall and comes into the season with First Team All-America preseason honors.

Rounding out the week was former Alabama baseball star Josh Rutledge, who returned two signed index cards and a questionnaire care of his summer league squad, the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. As a freshman last spring, Rutledge led the Tide with a .369 batting average.
