Saturday success...

It was another good day for a cool success as former Georgia running back Herschel Walker and Bulldog coach Vince Dooley each signed a pair of 4x6 photos. Walker won the 1982 Heisman Trophy, while Dooley took UGA to 20 bowl games in 25 seasons and also won a national championship before being elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994.

Also signing was Syracuse freshman phenom Jonny Flynn, who sent back a pair of index cards care of the athletic department in just 14 days. The Niagara Falls, NY native is averaging 15 points per game for the Orange.

High school baseball star Anthony Ferrera signed a pair of index cards and completed a questionnaire care of Riverview (FL) High School in just 17 days. A South Florida signee, Ferrera is a projected first round draft pick according to at least one website.

Catching up...

One of the coolest successes I've ever obtained finally arrived fully completed this week. The Brohm brothers - Jeff, Gregg, and Brian - each signed an 8x10 photo I designed and sent to them care of the Louisville athletic department. Jeff was a former Kentucky "Mr. Football" who went on to play in the NFL and is now coaching at UL. Like Jeff, Greg is also a current assistant at UL after starting for three years at WR for the Cardinals in the early '90's. Brian, of course, is the team's record-setting quarterback who is expected to be a top choice in this spring's NFL Draft.

Legendary college football running back Earl Campbell signed an index card and a pair of 4x6 photos in just 9 days. The former Texas Longhorn won the 1977 Heisman Trophy and was the first overall pick in the '78 NFL Draft.

Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing, who grabbed headlines as he led the Jayhawks to a one-loss season this past fall, signed a pair of index cards in 43 days. The Texas native completed 62% of his passes in 2007 and tossed 33 touchdowns while leading KU to an Orange Bowl victory.

Two current college baseball players and one former star signed this week as well. Former Arizona State 2B Eric Sogard signed a pair of index cards and a questionnaire in just 6 days. The former Sun Devil and Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year was taken in the 3rd round of last summer's MLB Draft by the Padres.

Also signing was UC-Irvine ace Scott Gorgen, a First Team Preseason All-American who helped lead the Anteaters to the College World Series last summer and sent back a pair of index cards care of UCI. Gorgen was third-best in the nation last season with 13 wins on the mound.

The final college baseball success was another pitcher, Louisiana Tech's Luke Burnett. The junior, a monster 6'8" and 220 pound right-hander, led the WAC with 115 strikeouts last spring and returned two index cards and the questionnaire care of LA Tech.

A number of college head coaches also signed, including Buffalo head football coach Turner Gill, as well as college hoops coaches Rick Barnes (Texas), Keith Dambrot (Akron), and Greg Kampe (Oakland).

Back-half recap, part I...

Four college baseball players and an NFL referee signed in the latter half of the week...

Vanderbilt infielder Ryan Flaherty signed a pair of index cards and partially completed a questionnaire care of the athletic department in just six days. The junior from Maine led the team in batting average as a freshman and was second on the squad last year as a sophomore, hitting .381 with a team-best 23 doubles.

Nebraska right-handed pitcher Johnny Dorn also signed a pair of index cards and completed a questionnaire care of the school in only 7 days. The junior was a Second Team All-American after the 2007 campaign that saw him compile a 10-3 record and 5.23 ERA in 16 starts.

Also signing was Rice right-handed pitcher Ryan Berry, last season's National Freshman of the Year. The Owls' stud signed a pair of index cards and completed a questionnaire care of the athletic department in just 6 days. Berry led Conference USA in both wins and strikeouts last season.

Rounding out the college baseball signers was Louisville right-handed pitcher Zack Pitts, who signed a pair of index cards and completed a questionnaire care of UL in only 6 days. The senior went 10-3 on the hill last year and compiled a 2.52 ERA in 18 starts as he helped lead the Cardinals to the College World Series.

And finally, NFL referee Mike Carey, arguably the best in the business, signed a pair of photos and an index card care of his business in just 9 days. Carey, who worked last week's snow-filled battle between Seattle and Green Bay, also included a nice note with the return.
