Recapping the week....

It was a full week at the mailbox...

Wake Forest star trio QB Riley Skinner, RB Micah Andrews, and K Sam Swank signed a pair of 8x10 photos I designed and sent to them care of WFU football. That took just six days. Skinner, last year's ACC Rookie of the Year who led the Demon Deacons to the ACC title, had already signed for me once. Andrews, meanwhile, who was a preseason all-ACC selection in 2006, rushed for over 250 yards and had 100 receiving yards in less than three games before tearing his ACL last fall. Swank, the MVP of last year's ACC championship game, was named a First Team All-American following the 2006 season, a campaign that saw him tie the NCAA record for most 50-yard field goals in a game (three, vs NCSU). (Click the image for a larger version.)

And speaking of Micah Andrews, he later in the week returned a request of his own that I had sent back in July care of the WFU athletic department. That request took just 34 days, and as you can see, it apparently lost a battle with the rain somewhere between Winston-Salem and my mailbox.

In addition to the Wake Forest successes, Notre Dame defensive back Tom Zbikowski signed a pair of index cards care of the school's athletic department in 39 days. The Irish star has earned Second and Third Team All-America honors on multiple occassions, and he is tied for the school's all-time lead in career punt returns for touchdowns while coming in 10th in all-time tackles.

Also signing was Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart. I believe this request was leftover from last season, and if so, it was sent care of the Oregon athletic department and took over 300 days to come back. Stewart, who also enclosed a card with a variety of Christian references on it, signed both index cards I had enclosed. He is a Maxwell Award nominee this season and needs less than 1000 rushing yards to crack Oregon's top ten all-time rushers. He is also one of the country's premier kick returners.

Next up was Missouri tight end Chase Coffman, a First Team All-Big XII selection as a sophomore last season. He signed a pair of index cards care of the university's athletic department in just 14 days. Coffman already holds the school record for most touchdowns by a tight end and combines with fellow tight end Martin Rucker to form arguably the deadliest duo at that position in the country.

Turning to hoops, incoming Kansas State freshman Bill Walker signed a pair of index cards care of his on-campus address in 50 days. Walker, a top ten national recruit a year ago, saw action in just six games last season before tearing his ACL. In that short time, though, he averaged over 11 points in just 23 minutes of action per game, and he is expected to be a huge contributor for the Wildcats in 2007-2008.

And finally on the diamond, former Wofford third baseman Brandon Waring signed a pair of index cards care of his current minor league squad, the Billings Mustangs. That request took 50 days. Waring, this past spring's SoCon Tournament MVP, was a First Team All-American in 2007 after hitting .403 with 27 homeruns for the Terriers. That longball total was tied for first in the entire country. In 65 games with the Mustangs since being drafted by the Reds in the 7th round, Waring has slugged 19 homeruns and is batting well over .300.

Star success...

Boise State running back Ian Johnson has signed and returned a pair of index cards care of the BSU athletic department in 53 days. Following a stellar sophomore season in 2006, Johnson was named a First Team All-American by multiple publications, and he has garnered similar honors heading into 2007. In helping lead the Broncos to the BCS last year, Johnson led the nation in scoring and touchdowns, while ranking second nationally in rushing with nearly 145 yards per game.

Also signing was Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman. The freshman signed a pair of index cards and also included a small card of his own in just 22 days care of the KSU athletic department. In his first season under center, Freeman started the final 8 games for the Wildcats and was the only freshman QB in the country to lead his team to a bowl game in 2006. He threw for nearly 1800 yards, a KSU freshman record, last fall and also helped lead the 'Cats to a stunning, late-season upset of then national title contender Texas.

Johnson also took time to complete my questionnaire. That, in addition to the small card Freeman sent along, can be viewed by visiting our forum. In addition, you can see the exact addresses used to contact these players by visiting our Success Database.

Another D-IAA success....

Western Illinois running back Herb Donaldson has signed and returned a pair of index cards care of the school's athletic department in just 27 days. The junior has been named a Preseason First Team All-American by multiple publications after rushing for nearly 130 yards per game last fall. That fabulous sophomore season was highlighted by a 328-yard, 6 touchdown performance against Indiana State, a game that saw Donaldson set a D-IAA record with 282 rushing yards in a single half. The 5'10" 220 pound bruiser scored 18 touchdowns in 2006, more than any other sophomore in D-IAA.

Check out the message board to see the questionnaire Donaldson returned, and visit our Success Database to see the address used to contact the Leathernecks' star.

Painter signs...

Purdue QB Curtis Painter is the latest college football success. The Boilermakers' star signed a pair of index cards care of the school's football office in just six days. Painter, who was recently named to the Manning Award Watch List, led the Big Ten in total offense and passing yards. His nearly-4000 yards through the air broke the old conference record, set by fellow Purdue star and current New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees.

Painter also completed my questionnaire, which can be viewed on the message board. In addition, you can see the exact address used to contact the Purdue star by checking out our Success Database.

Slash signs....

Former Colorado star quarterback Kordell Stewart signed a pair of index cards care of his home address in just over a month. During his time under center for the Buffaloes, Stewart set a number of school records, including most passing yards and most touchdown passes. Twice he led Colorado to top five finishes. Stewart also completed the questionnaire I sent him, which you can view by visiting our forum. In addition, you can view the address used to contact Stewart by visiting our Success Database.

Tailbacks times two...

Oklahoma running back Allen Patrick was one of two tailbacks to sign on Friday. The Sooners' leading rusher signed both index cards I sent care of Oklahoma Football in just 14 days. Patrick took over for Adrian Peterson when he was injured last fall and ended up running for nearly 800 yards and a half-dozen touchdowns on the season. In five starts, he ran for more than 100 yards four times, including a spectacular 173-yard performance against Oklahoma State.

Also signing was Chadron State's Danny Woodhead. The Eagles' star became the first college football player in history to run for 2700 yards in a single season last fall. He signed both index cards care of Chadron State Football in just 20 days. No player in the country had more all-purpose yards (3100) or touchdowns (38) than did Woodhead, who was given the Harlon Hill Trophy at season's end, recognizing him as the top D-II player in the nation.

Both players also completed questionnaires, which you can view by visiting our message board. You can also see the exact mailing addresses used to contact these players, and many more, by checking out our Success Database.

Offensive firepower...

A pair of college football's top touchdown producers returned successes on Saturday...

Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell, who threw for more than 4500 yards and 38 touchdowns in his first season as a starter last fall, signed a small photo he provided but did not return the index cards I had enclosed. That request, which was returned in 24 days, was sent care of the Texas Tech athletic department. The junior is on pace to shatter every Red Raider passing record, which would be a remarkable achievement. He had the fourth-best sophomore season of any player in NCAA history in 2006 and is a Manning Award candidate heading into 2007.

Meanwhile, Purdue WR Dorien Bryant signed a pair of index cards care of the university's athletic department. That request took just 29 days. The 2006 First Team All-Big Ten selection ranks third on the school's all-time list in both receptions and all-purpose yards. Last fall he had nearly 1100 receiving yards and hauled in 8 touchdowns.

A mailbox full....

Four successes got the week off to a great start...

Former USC wide receiver and recent Carolina Panthers 2nd round selection Dwayne Jarrett signed a pair of index cards for me care of the team's main address. That success took 27 days. Jarrett is the Trojans' all-time receptions leader, and he holds the PAC-10 record for TD catches, both accomplishments that led to his two-time First Team All-America selections.

Also signing was current Virginia Tech defensive end Chris Ellis. The Hawaiian, who is coming off an offseason shoulder surgery, signed both index cards care of the VT athletic department in just 19 days. Ellis has already been named a Preseason First Team All-American after tying for the team lead in sacks a season ago.

A couple of D-IAA's top players also signed, including star Appalachian State running back Kevin Richardson, a consensus preseason First Team All-American. Richardson, who ran for 179 yards in the national title game as he led the ASU to the victory last winter, signed in just 9 days care of the school's athletic department. It was the team's second straight national title. In addition to the All-America honors, Richardson was also named the D-IAA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year by Street & Smith's magazine after setting a D-IAA record with 30 rushing TDs in 2006.

And finally it was McNeese State special teams standout Steven Whitehead, also a D-IAA preseason First Team All-American, signing a pair of index cards. Whitehead, who can play both wide receiver and running back, signed in 9 days care of the MSU athletic department. He was named the Southland Conference's Player of the Year following the 2006 campaign after leading the Cowboys in receiving and all-purpose yards a season ago.

All four players also completed questionnaires, which can be viewed by visiting the message board. In addition, if you would like to see the exact addresses used to contact each of the players, you can do so by visiting our Success Database.

Lumberjack success...

Northern Arizona wide receiver Alex Watson, one of the top D-IAA players in the country, has signed a pair of index cards care of the school's athletic department in just six days. He was a consensus First Team All-American following last season and has been nominated for similar preseason honors this summer. Watson, who will be a senior in 2007, had a school-record 82 receptions for over 1000 yards and a NAU-record 15 touchdowns last fall.

You can view the exact address this request was sent to by visiting our Success Database.

Gridiron success...

Former star Florida safety Reggie Nelson has signed and returned a pair of index cards in just 22 days. That request was sent to him care of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who selected him with the 21st overall pick of this past April's NFL Draft. No Jaguars DB has ever been selected higher than Nelson. He was a consensus First Team All-American for the national champion Gators and left school following his junior season after winning the Jack Tatum Award as the nation's top defensive back.

UCLA running back Chris Markey also signed a pair of index cards. That request was sent care of the school's athletic department and was returned in just 14 days. The Bruins' back, who will be a senior in 2007, led the team in both rushing and receptions last fall and averaged more than 100 all-purpose yards per game.

Markey also returned the questionnaire I sent him; that can be viewed by visiting our forum. In addition, you can see the exact addresses used to contact these players by visiting our Success Database.
